During the pandemic lockdown, I began taking an interest in new creative endeavors, seeking inspiration from unusual places. One of the most interesting and exciting was the art of rug making, also known as tufting. I began researching how rugs were made and what was needed to make them, and I was surprised to learn that you could make them from home also.
With this new creative outlet in mind, I constructed my own tufting frame, sourced a tufting gun, and began the learning process, going through trial and error, but continuing with the process to simply gain experience and understand the craft.
After several months of progress, staying up late at night, and making frustrating mistakes, I have the utmost respect for all forms of handcrafted rugs and beyond. I’m so appreciative of this art form and it has definitely given me a newfound sense of creative joy and satisfaction.
The following are a handful of commissions for friends and family over the past few years, which can be found at Avid Rugs.
